Owyhee County has some of the most remarkable landscapes in all of the continental United States, and includes rivers, mountains, lakes, deserts, and dunes.  However, Owyhee County is one of the most sparsely populated areas within the state, but has a large variety of properties, including ranches and farms. Per the 2020 census, the county had a population of 11,913. Owyhee County is the second-largest county in the state, by area.

Interestingly, the name of this county derives from usage of the Hawaiian islands and . During the fur trading era in the first half of the 1800s. 3 native Hawaiians were seen in the area then disappeared. British fur traders called the area "Owyhee" in their honor.

There are several ghost towns in the county, dating from the gold rush era.
